For Those Who Came In Of Late:
This is the latest installment in what began as my entry in the Young Adult Vampire Novel Challenge.

If you don't read fanfic, this ain't. If you don't read Twilight, there's nobody here who sparkles.

There is, however, an alternate, quasi-steampunkish USA, where cricket is one of the most popular sports, fast food consists mostly of sausages and pies, and the dollar is divided into ten shillings of ten pence each. In this world, one finds Shawnee State very approximately where, in our world, one finds the State of Ohio. And in Ludington City, Shawnee State, one finds Dermot O'Donovan, Stanislava Morrison, and their newfound friend and high school classmate, the mysterious and occasionally anachronistic Ashley Mundy.

The sun was beginning to set when they rode home at last. As they neared Ashley's house, she ceased chattering and grew quiet. It's as if she's planning on asking us something, Stanislava thought. I wonder what? To stay the night and sleep in her bed? I can imagine her saying that we'd chaperone each other well enough... No, of course not. She hoped they'd not gone too far by hugging Ashley, both of them at once. I'd hate to frighten her away from Dermot. They'd make such a lovely pair.

I know, this isn't even close to professional quality, but it was the only thing I could think of. Sorry for that. Sorry also that it's a day late.

It was written a few years ago, when I heard something about a call for submissions for a "science fiction cliché" issue of some magazine or other. It's essentially an attempt to write drastically old-fashioned space opera, the kind of thing I grew up on, complete with horses-in-the-starship-hold, psychologically human-ish aliens, interstellar monarchy, and interesting name combinations.

Untitled Space Opera Short Story

The locals were not happy. A complete novice in reading non-human behaviour might have wondered if the Mekh’rar, meter-tall beings who resembled horned kangaroos as much as anything Earthly, were welcoming His Royal Highness the Duke of Pluto, Iain Alexei Barak Saieed Fergus Genji Graham, their new Imperial Viceroy, by pounding their tails on the ground, waving sticks with signs attached, blowing the hollowed horn-like appendages of the quadrupedal drakh, and vocalising loud hissing noises.

Up to 12,100 words now.

The first 500 words of this are the result of a challenge from my friend Eve, to write 500 words without using adjectives or adverbs. This is bloody hard for somebody who writes as I do, and I may've slipped up somewhere.

Up to 10,300 words now. I'm not sure I've ever got any story to keep going this long before.

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] a_treitell, who, inadvertently, whilst talking about television viewing, provided me with the inspiration for Deanna the Doggy Dominatrix.

Being the Un Birth Day of the late esteemed Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, called Luwis Carolus

The State of Things in this fair Duchy of Connecticutt, dear Friendes all, remaineth curious and curiouser still. Her Grace the Duchess Rellian hath sustained her Right to rule, having gained Victory in her Single Combatte against Martha of the Stuarte. Although this Reporter must confess to little Fondnesse for much of the Policy of her Grace, he must nonetheless declare himself moste grateful, as Martha of the Stuarte be well known for her Practise of loathesome Rites devoted to the Elder Daemon Cthulluette.

One hopes that her Grace, having Sovranty thus sustained by Triumph on the Field, will next turn her Hand towards putting down the Scourge of the Air-filled Monstrosities which make their Appearance without the Housen of certaine Individuals what make their Habitation in this Duchy. Wrought in the Formes of divers Elemental Spirits, such as the green-visaged Mountain-Wose ycallt Grinche and the fearsome Snow Man Frostye–this last a Being classed by Natural Philosophers and Scholars of Magick Arte as close Kin to the deathly Windigo–these Inflated Horrors wrong our Landscape and, by causing Offense to the Ylfes, Trolles, and other Landwights of our Regionne, threaten the Fruit of the Fields and the Industrie and Prosperitie of this Duchy, if not this entire Eastern Kingdom.

This being the CLXXIIIth Birth Day of the Honourable and Esteem’d Late Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, called Luwis Carolus

I woke this morn to the sounds of ornithopters and hooves. I threw on my clothes and proceeded out of doors, pausing only to seize my boffered sword and nerfbowe, in case it should prove a raiding of mine esteemèd friend and far neighbour Temujin and his Mongol camrados. (As all we here were learnt in dameschool, from Anno Domini 1732 to the present day all engagements twixt the Hudson Khanate and the Duchy of Connecticutt are limited to boffered weapons, this being caused by the Breuklen Project’s rediscovering of the ancient Atlantean chymical manufactures of cell-closèd foame and duct’s tape.)

To read, an it please you, further )
