Hello all,

Sorry for my sometimes protracted absences. Life is... interesting.

Well, I'm not here to talk about my father's discs and stenosis, or spending way too much of last evening in the ER waiting for them to give him dilaudin. Or about the fascinating experience of listening to a girl the next bay to his who'd OD'd on huffing ether (got it from brake fluid or somesuch, apparently), explaining she couldn't go into rehab cos she had to graduate high school first.

Instead, I'm thinking about C&C. How to give it. When to give it. If to give it. That sort of thing.

Someone on the Gaeilge LJ comm's just made a dumb post about how he thinks he's made a real breakthrough learning Irish. But he calls the prepositions "pronouns" (they're personal prepositions, yes, but they're still more preposition than pronoun) and it's obvious he's still thinking in terms of memorising tricks of translation, rather than learning the vocabularly and grammar of the language in a manner that allows actually using it; he's been making posts like this for months, and I'm quite sick of it. I really just want to say "You're never going to learn this language until you actually start learning it and stop trying to learn to translate it, you twit!" but it won't do any damned good. I've tried the gentle route, and it doesn't work.

And does anyone (Antosha?) know the author called "Grand Poobah" on Restricted Section? Someone really needs to tell him that Harry and the Founders wouldn't just be not knowing some of each others' words, they'd not be speaking remotely the same language. (Even assuming that the common language of the Founders was Old English, which I very much doubt--my guess would be that Latin served them as a lingua franca.) But I really don't want another dose of the-author-of-"Ricky and Rowena"-style "how dare you ask me to do research" vitriol.

I suppose I'm not really so much in need of advice as just to vent. *sigh* I'm really quite tired of this planet these days.
